Explanation for selecting the work of art/design
This is a book cover design that appeared about underwater pollution. This design expresses how the plastic waste produced by humans is polluting the ocean and affecting the creatures that live in it. The reason I chose this design is that even though it uses a lot of colors and looks very beautiful at first glance, if you look closely at the content of the illustration, you'll notice that there's a lot of garbage in it. I thought this part, where you can't tell just by looking at it for a moment that the garbage is depicted, really expresses the current state of ocean issues.
About for "Design Principle", we can find "Movement", "Contrast" "Emphasis" "Harmony" and "Repetition" from this picture.

This design is a horizontal design. In the center is a small boat with a small children on it, and around it are depicted sea creatures such as dolphins, rays, seals, sea turtles, and marlin, as well as garbage such as kang. In the lower right corner, characters related to the illustration are written. In terms of visual elements, blue, light blue, and white are the main colors. The overall design gives a gloominess.
The design principles included in this design can be found in Emphasis, where a children and a small boat are depicted in the center of the vortex, where nature and perspective are concentrated in a small boat, and Repetition is depicted in the depiction of creatures and garbage floating in the sea. Also, from the upper left to the lower right of the design, you can see the gradation where the color of the sea changes from light to dark. In addition, you can see the movement of the ripple from the use of colors, creatures such as fish, and the place where garbage is drawn. And Finally, from the peaceful atmosphere you can also discover elements of harmony.
This design was drawn as the cover of a children's picture book called "The Sea of Plastic", which was released on June 5, 2020. Julia Bratman drew this design, and the size of the design is B12. From the drawing of small children on a small boat, I thought that this design was drawn not to convey the problem of marine pollution to adults, but to convey a message to the children who will support the future. By drawing a lot of creatures and a lot of garbage in a beautiful sea, I think that artist trying to make children think about why there is so much garbage when they see this design, and to get them interested in the problem of marine pollution from a young age.

(5. The Design I chose)
Reasons, etc.
Out of the three sketches, I chose Sketch 1 after much deliberation. This design is based on the theme of marine pollution problems, and I designed a way of garbage that humans usually throw into the sea is mixed into the sea by rough waves. The reason for using rough waves to raise the issue of marine pollution is that in Japan, large waves are recognized as objects of fear and ominous due to the effects of tsunamis and other factors, and by daring to use such rough waves, we used it to imply that if the marine pollution problem is left unchecked, bad consequences await us in the not too distant future.
In this design, you can find 3 kinds of design principles. First, you can discover Contrast from the background that represents an eerie sky. And then, you can see the movement from the movement of the waves, the garbage carried by the waves, and the seagulls flying in the sky. Also you can find Repetition in the pieces of garbage floating in the air.

5. Reflection
Experience - During the seven weeks I have been taking the Design Principles, I have learned a lot about the visual elements that go into a design.
Observation - During the seven weeks I took this course, I realized that many of the designs in the world have logically established visual elements.
Findings - By taking this design principle class, I was able to logically look at the designs that I had thought were just amazing, and I was able to explain them to others, as if there were these visual elements included here, and if these elements were incorporated here.
