REFLECTION

Experience

Advanced Typography felt more flexible and independent compared to Typography. At first, I had some difficulty with typography due to the strict rules, but after experiencing both modules, my perspective changed significantly. In particular, the type design–focused tasks were the most enjoyable for me and became an opportunity to discover a new area of interest.
Initially, I was worried about Task 3 because of the heavy workload. However, by applying what I learned in Tasks 1 and 2, it eventually became the most memorable task. Although balancing this module with others was challenging at times, I managed to complete all the tasks and was satisfied with the final outcomes.

Observations

After learning Typography, I became more conscious of observing and analysing typography and lettering in my everyday environment. At the same time, I realised that layout work still takes more time for me compared to generating type design ideas. This was especially evident in the typographic systems task, which required more experimentation than I had expected.
I also observed that producing work requires not only technical skills but also resilience and mental endurance. There were moments when I felt close to burnout, but because the tasks aligned with my interests, I was able to stay motivated and complete them.

Findings

Through this module, I discovered the depth and enjoyment of typography, particularly type design. I learned that designing letters or logos involves more than visual appearance; it also requires careful consideration of intention, message, and functionality.
In addition, typographic systems proved to be an effective method for expanding ideas. While they were challenging at first, experimenting with them helped generate new concepts. At the same time, working on kerning made me realise how demanding and precise typography can be, reinforcing the importance of attention to detail in this field.
