WORK

Project 2

For this task, we need to make a 10 to 15 seconds channel bumper by individual or group.

I chose individual and start to make a channel bumper.

This slide documents the entire production process of Task 2 and Task 3, from start to finish.

First, I make a mood board for this project.

For Project 2 & 3, I chose the haircare brand Kerastase as the focus of my channel bumper. Since the brand features many purple-colored products, I decided to use a purple-based color palette for the video. Additionally, because Kerastase is a luxury brand, I selected a calm and elegant soundtrack that conveys a sense of richness.

After I make a mood board I start to draw story board for video.

This is the storyboard that I drawn.

Since it is a haircare brand, I planned to begin the animation with a ripple effect to evoke the feeling of water. After that, the brand’s initial “K” logo appears, followed by a pop-up of the full “Kerastase” logo. For the scene transition, a group of rectangles moves from the bottom right to the top left, revealing the brand’s product. Then, with a slight delay, a short description of what the product is used for appears on screen.

After I drawn the storyboard, I opened the photoshop and prepare the images for video.

These are images that I prepare by using photoshop. I start to edit the video for project 1.

This is the screen of editing.

In the video editing process, I first created short compositions for specific scenes, such as the ripple effect and the transitions using rectangles.

After creating the short compositions, I began assembling them to produce the final version of the video. I combined the ripple and scene transition compositions according to the storyboard, and also created scenes for the logo reveal and product introduction. I chose to create the logo and product motion graphics directly in the main composition rather than as separate short compositions, because I thought it might be difficult to adjust their positions otherwise. However, in hindsight, I realized that the workload would have been about the same either way. Creating them within the main composition only made the file more complex. So next time, I think it would be better to create those elements as short compositions first and then bring them into the main composition.

Project 3

For Project 3, I need to develop this video more. So first, I rewrite the storyboard.

This is the storyboard that I draw for Project 3. By incorporating other products from the same brand into the video, I was able to create more opportunities to include a wider variety of motion graphics.

For the production of Project 3, I started editing using the After Effects file from Project 2 as the base. First, I created the product introduction scene as a short composition.

After creating the short compositions, I began assembling them to build the final video, just like in Project 2. In the final composition file, I also added other motion graphics besides the short compositions—such as brand products sliding in from the top and bottom, rectangular shapes for scene transitions, expanding circles for transition effects, text appearances, and the final logo reveal.

At first, I didn’t create these elements as short compositions because I wasn’t sure how they would turn out in the final product. However, I later realized that it would have been better to build them as short compositions from the start. So for future projects, I plan to structure these elements in short compositions as much as possible to keep the final composition file from becoming unnecessarily complicated.

Finally, this is the Completed video for Project 3.

REFELECTION

Through Projects 2 and 3, I learned how to create a channel bumper using motion graphics. To be honest, I was extremely anxious at the beginning because I’ve always struggled with video editing. However, by asking friends who are good at editing for ideas, and receiving feedback during lectures, I gradually started to find the editing process more enjoyable.

These projects taught me how using short composition files can make the overall file structure much clearer and easier to manage. I also developed my ability to express brand identity through motion graphics. Previously, I would often approach video editing with only a vague idea of the mood I wanted. But through this experience, I came to understand the importance of mood boards, and I learned how to clarify and refine my ideas more effectively.

I still feel that motion graphics is a challenging field and that there is a lot I need to learn. But thanks to these projects, I’ve started to enjoy the process of creating motion graphics. I hope to keep studying and improving so that I can create even better motion graphics in the future.
