WORK
For this task, we need to make two types of Jumping Animation. One is Normal Jumping and one is Cartoon Jumping.
Using the same approach, I adjusted the character’s movement frame by frame while changing the frame rate, gradually building up the jumping animation. One detail I focused on was the landing — I made sure the body slightly moves forward to reflect the momentum from the jump.
This is the completed animation of Normal Jumping.
For next step, I start to make Cartoon Jumping Animation.
For the Cartoon Jumping animation, I used the normal jumping animation I initially created as the base. At first, I wasn't sure what exactly "Cartoon Jumping" meant, so I did some research and also asked the lecturer for clarification.
As a result of my research and discussions, I learned that, broadly speaking, Cartoon Jumping is characterized by a longer anticipation (squash) phase before takeoff, and a quicker motion up to the jump's highest point. The jumping style in Tom and Jerry matched this image perfectly. So, I adjusted the keyframes from the normal jumping animation, modifying the timing to have the character hold the anticipation pose for a longer period before launching into the jump.
After creating the anticipation (squash) phase, I moved on to animating the ascent to the jump's highest point. In the normal jump animation, I used about 7 frames for this motion, but for the cartoon jumping animation, I shortened it to just 2 frames in order to reach the peak much more quickly.
After that, I adjusted the rest of the animation to match the updated frame timing and completed the Cartoon Jumping Animation.
This is the completed animation of Cartoon Jumping Animation.
Finally, combine Normal Jumping Animation and Cartoon Jumping Animation and completed the video.
REFLCETION
Through this assignment, I was able to deepen my understanding of 3D animation even further. At first, I thought creating a jumping animation would be relatively easy, but once I began the process, I realized how challenging it actually was. My first attempt resulted in a choppy and awkward movement, so I ended up starting over from scratch. After several adjustments, I was finally able to create a smoother and more natural-looking animation.
Additionally, I initially didn’t fully understand the differences between Cartoon Animation and Normal Animation, but by researching and asking questions during lectures, I was able to gain new knowledge and apply it effectively.
This project helped solidify my basic animation skills in Blender, and I now feel more confident. I’d like to continue learning more advanced techniques as I move forward to the final project.
